Oscar Collazo (1914-1994) was a Puerto Rican nationalist who is best known for his attempted assassination of President Harry S. Truman in 1950. Collazo and his partner, Griselio Torresola, attacked the Blair House in Washington, D.C., where President Truman was staying while the White House was under renovation. The assassination attempt failed, and Torresola was killed during the attack, while Collazo was wounded and captured.
Collazo was sentenced to death for his role in the assassination attempt but his sentence was later commuted to life in prison by President Truman. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter commuted his sentence to time served, and Collazo was released from prison after serving 29 years.
After his release, Collazo became a prominent figure in the Puerto Rican nationalist movement and continued to advocate for Puerto Rican independence. He remained active in politics and social justice issues until his death in 1994.
Collazo's actions and beliefs continue to be a controversial topic in Puerto Rican and American history, with some viewing him as a hero for his commitment to Puerto Rican independence, while others see him as a criminal for his attempted assassination of a sitting U.S. President.
